Daniel Squadron wants to bring much-needed change and reform to Albany, and achieve results for the people of the 25th State Senate District in Manhattan and Brooklyn. He has spent his career in public service, improving the lives of New Yorkers and finding innovative solutions to our toughest public policy challenges.
Daniel served as one of Senator Chuck Schumer’s closest aides. Together, they authored Positively American: Winning Back the Middle Class Majority One Family at a Time, which offers original and practical ideas to achieve real results for working and middle-class Americans, including improving public schools, ending our dependence on foreign oil and making college more affordable. Widely praised and referenced, the New York Times said the book offers a “blueprint for change and renewal” and Senator Hillary Clinton called it a “must-read.”
Daniel was asked to serve on the Bloomberg Administration team that designed the New York City Empowerment Schools program, which shifts money out of the bureaucracy and into the classroom, where it belongs. The Economist and others have branded the program a success, citing improved grades and increased attendance at participating schools.
Daniel also was Communications Director on the campaign that successfully passed the New York State Transportation Bond Act, a $2.9 billion investment in rebuilding our public transit system. Passage of the Act helped break three decades of gridlock to make the Second Avenue Subway a reality.
Dedication to public service as a way to create meaningful change began at an early age for Daniel. His father rose from poverty to become the Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. His grandfather was a World War II veteran and Brigadier General in the Air Force. His mother volunteered during the Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964 and was a top staffer at the American Civil Liberties Union.
A graduate of Yale University, Daniel lives in Carroll Gardens, where he attends Brooklyn Heights Synagogue.
