Fort Greene Park Conservancy Summer Announcements
    June 2007

    Greetings!

We are thrilled to provide you with more information about our Free Film Festival, which features dates throughout the summer beginning this Saturday, June 2nd. The schedule, which is still being finalized, is listed below. This series is just one of the many programs we sponsor and organize in Fort Greene Park year round. Interested movie fans should check the Fort Greene Park Conservancy website shortly for more up-to-date information.

All film screenings will start after dusk and will also feature pre-show entertainment. Each night food will also be available, supplied by some of Fort Greene's best local restaurants, a few of which are listed below. Other food vendors are still to be announced.

The festival is made possible by a generous grant from Partnership for Parks and loyal community partners, especially Council Member Letitia James and the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership. We are always looking for volunteers to staff park events and are actively seeking additional corporate sponsors. If you're interested in being part of our park lovers' community please email us and be sure to visit our website.

    See you at the movies!

    Thursday, August 30th:
    Baseball Night

    Dusk to 11:00 PM
The Fort Greene Park Conservancy in association with American Opera Project (AOP) presents an evening of "Baseball through the Eye of the Artist":

    • AOP presents scenes from its opera-under-development "The Summer King" by Daniel Sonenberg. The protagonist of the opera is Josh Gibson, the renowned negro-league baseball slugger whose tragic story ended just before Jackie Robinson broke through the color barrier with The Brooklyn Dodgers. Using a contemporary musical language of jazzy melodies and jagged harmonies the opera portrays Gibson as a mythic character trapped by societal circumstances: a mega-athlete emotionally unable to weather the strong tides of change.
    • FGPC presents "Bang The Drum Slowly," the acclaimed 1973 baseball film that marked the beginning of Robert DeNiro's illustrious film career. Directed by John D. Hancock focuses on the intense brotherly relationship between a star pitcher and his less talented, terminally ill catcher.

Artisan MarketSaturday Shopping at the Artisan Market

Located adjacent to the GreenMarket at the corner of DeKalb and Washington Park, the Artisan Market is being held on only five more Saturdays this summer: June 2, June 16, June 30, August 25, September 1. Don't miss it.

Since its debut three years ago the Artisan Market has provided a much-needed venue for local artists and designers to show and sell their wares in an easily accessible and popular location. The Market creates a veritable outdoor sidewalk gallery showing a wide range of functional and collectible art and design items. Artists personally display and sell only their own original creations. Added to the benefit of purchasing a well crafted original, one also has the opportunity to talk to the artist about how their piece was made. The Urban Park Rangers conduct educational programs on weekends throughout the year. This month you can learn about Fort Greene's unique history, the insects and birds found in the park, our wildflowers and trees, and the original Native Americans of the Brooklyn area. The full Urban Park Rangers schedule is available on the Conservancy website or in the newly-renovated Visitors Center at the top of the hill in the Park. The Rangers also provide subsidized special programs for groups or classrooms.
