    October 2007

    Dear Subscriber,

Thank you to all who supported the Conservancy’s wine tasting fundraiser on September 28 at the Brooklyn War Memorial. Among the distinguished guests were Councilperson Letitia James and Assemblyman candidate Hakeem Jeffries. Pratt Institute’s Lighting Lab students lit the outside of the War Memorial with brilliant artistry using a design by Paul Palazzo and a generous donation of lighting equipment by ColorKinetics. The event was a resounding success and raised over $15,000 for the Conservancy, funds that help invest in staffing, maintenance projects and free programming in our beautiful park. If you are interested in volunteering to help with future fundraisers, please email amy@greenegrape.com. Special thanks goes to the Greene Grape Wine stores for their access to great tasting wines and the involvement of a friendly, highly skilled staff and to Public New York and Sundog Printing for invitation and poster design and printing. We couldn’t have done it without them.

Fundraisers aren't the only way to participate in celebrating and improving Brooklyn's historic park. This month, we feature volunteer opportunities for It's My Park Day!, October 21, as well as information on Urban Park Ranger programs at the newly-renovated Visitors Center and the Seventh Annual Halloween Festival. See you at the park!

Ask The Park Manager - Ranger Programs in the Park

Question: I have heard there are ranger's programs in the park. When do these occur and how can I find out more information about what age range these programs are appropriate for?

Answer: The Urban Park Rangers conduct educational programs on weekends throughout the year. The schedule and detailed information about appropriate ages for the programs is available in the newly-renovated Visitors Center at the top of the hill in the Park or on the Conservancy website. This month, you can join us for a discussion of the history of the park, take a guided Tree Walk, listen to ghost stories and even view a two-part film series ("Ghostbusters" and "Ghostbusters II"). The Rangers also provide subsidized special programs for groups or classrooms. For more information about the Urban Park Rangers, visit the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation website. Seventh Annual Halloween Festival October 28

A favorite Fort Greene tradition, this year's Halloween Festival will take place on Saturday, October 28, 2007 from 12 noon to 3:00 p.m. Some of Fort Greene's favorite local arts organizations supply the day's entertainment. Cirque Boom Circus Theater sends its stilt walkers, clowns, and jugglers; Salt & Pepper Mime provides storytellers; and Fusha Dance Company exhibits its African drumming and audience participation dancing. Children will also be treated to pony rides, hay rides, face painting, pumpkin decorating, games, and prizes. To cap off the Halloween Festival, a costume parade with prizes for children will take place starting at 2:00 p.m.

This event is made possible in part by the generous leadership gifts from Aguayo & Huebener Real Estate, BAM Local Development Corp, Brooklyn Properties, Clermont Armory, Corcoran Group, and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. To volunteer for the festival or for sponsorship information email jonscheff@yahoo.com.
