Restoring the Beacon Atop the Park February 2007

    Dear Subscriber,

If you've visited the park recently, you've seen the progress being made on the restoration of the Prison Ship Martyr's Monument, thanks in part to funding secured by the Conservancy. As part of the restoration, which is expected to be completed by Fall of 2007, the flame in the bronze urn atop the monument will be restored. The original flame was gas lit but the new flame will be illuminated by optic cable. The panoramic view from the top of the monument shows that the flame will be seen throughout Fort Greene, downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan! Please consider making a contribution to the Conservancy to help us continue our mission to celebrate and improve the park.

Bundle up if you’re in the park – winter is finally here!

    MulchFest 2007!

On Thursday, January 4th Mayor Bloomberg joined us in Fort Greene Park for a press party to kickoff MulchFest – the Parks Department's citywide effort to recycle Christmas trees as woodchips and mulch for parks and gardens. Along with Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe and Borough President Marty Markowitz, the Mayor praised the Fort Greene Park Conservancy for its leadership in MulchFest 2007. Thanks to the FGPC for the first time trees were chipped in the park – to the delight of the dozens of children who witnessed the sights and sounds of Valley Tree Service transforming pines and firs into useful mulch.

Tree and Bench Sponsorship Available Soon

The Conservancy is in the final stages of a plan to offer private sponsorship of benches and trees in the park. This program has been successful in city parks like Central Park and the Conservancy is thrilled to provide the community with an opportunity to spruce up our own park (pun intended). Look for more news on this effort in upcoming newsletters and if you’re interested in sponsoring a bench or tree, contact Charles Jarden.

    The Urban Park Rangers Programs

The Urban Park Rangers conduct educational programs on weekends throughout the year. The program schedule for Fort Greene Park is available on the Fort Greene Park Conservancy website or at the newly-renovated Visitors Center at the top of the hill in the Park. The Rangers also provide subsidized special programs for groups or classrooms. For more information about the Urban Park Rangers, visit their Department of Parks & Recreation website.
