    December 2006

    Dear Subscriber,

Just when you thought the gift-giving (and receiving) part of the year was over, the Fort Greene Park Conservancy is proud to offer an additional holiday present to the community. Thanks to Conservancy and Parks Department efforts, for the first time Fort Greene Park is designated as a site for the mulching of Christmas trees through the Parks Department program MULCHFEST. Previously the Park had only been a tree drop-off site. The actual sights and sounds of mulching will occur on Sunday, January 7 from noon to 4pm. Trees and other decorations can be dropped off at the park entrance at Willoughby and Washington Park on Saturday, January 6 and Sunday, January 7. Chips from the Mulchfest will be placed in tree pits and gardens and participants are urged to bring trash bags if they are interested in taking away free mulch.

Read below for more information and instructions on how to participate in Mulchfest. And if you're considering a year-end donation to a charitable organization, why not consider the Fort Greene Park Conservancy? You can donate online through Paypal on the Conservancy website or send a check to 85 South Oxford Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217. See you in the Park!

    Instructions for Mulchfest

MulchFest Drop off in Fort Greene Park is Saturday January 6 and Sunday January 7. Sunday January 7, 2007, 12 noon to 4 PM, a Chipper machine will be in the park making the mulch. PLEASE NOTE: All lights, ornaments, and decorations must be removed from the trees prior to drop-off. Participants will be able to take wood chips and/or mulch home from chipping site. Jeff Sandgrund, Park Manager will have staff in the park Saturday and Sunday to ensure that people are dropping off their trees in the right spot.

Ten reasons to participate in MulchFest: 1) recycling is good for the environment 2) contribute your tree and help maintain the park 3) keep your holiday decorations working for you and the community by mulching 4) get free mulch for your own garden (bring bags) 5) get to know more about the park and the FGPC 6) introduce kids to the ecological systems in nature 7) get exercise by hauling your tree to the park 8) meet neighbors 9) get free hot chocolate on Sunday during the Chipper session. 10) see how big your neighbor's tree was

    Sledding Guidelines

The first rule of sledding in Fort Greene Park is that you cannot sled if there is no snow. Just in case the weather takes a turn for the better and we get a snowstorm, Park Manager Jeff Sandgrund offers the following reminder about safe sledding in Fort Greene Park: Fort Greene Park is a great place for sledding. There are numerous hills, and the Parks Department will even provide hot chocolate and sleds on snow days (whenever possible and until both run out). The danger occurs when people try to sled down the stairs. Though covered in snow they make what appears to be the most perfect hill, they are often slick, have uneven snow cover, and at the end is a wall. A young lady severely injured herself doing this last year, and we would like to avoid a repeat performance. The other sledding hazard to keep in mind is that there is a ten foot drop on the other side of the wall surrounding the park.
