    Greetings!

Throughout August and into the fall the Conservancy is sponsoring free programming and events that we hope will attract and please park-goers of all ages. Along with the Fort Greene Park Film Festival, August events include the free Summer Literary Festival on August 18, which features readings by known authors, together with participants in this summer's Writer's Workshop. We invite you to join us.

The Conservancy is always looking for volunteers and patrons to be part of our mission to celebrate and maintain historic Fort Greene Park. Did you know that the park's centerpiece, the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument, is on the National Register of Historic Places? and that the monument was designed by renowned architect Standford White, and will be 100 years old next year?

We hope you are as excited about the quality of our free programming and our efforts to refurbish the park as much as we are. Your participation and comments are always welcome.

    See you in the park!

Wine Glass Have a Drink for Us at our Annual Winetasting Fundraiser!

Just in time for the fall season the Fort Greene Park Conservancy will again be holding their Winetasting Fundraiser on October 1, 2007. Last year's popular event provided a fine time for all who attended. All proceeds from the gathering will enable the Conservancy to fund park improvements and expand programming and outreach initiatives for Brooklyn's most historic park.

For a donation of $90 to the Conservancy you will be able to taste over 100 wines. A VIP donation of $150 entitles you to attend a special wine tasting class and priority access to the wines. Corporate sponsorship opportunities are also available. At this time details about the fundraiser are still being finalized and are subject to change, so check back with us for more news. For tickets or more information, please contact Conservancy Board Member Amy Bennett.

Artisan Market Don't Miss the Eighth Annual Halloween Festival on October 27

A favorite Fort Greene tradition for children of all ages, this year's Fort Green Park Halloween Festival will take place on Saturday, October 27, 2007 from 12 noon to 3:00 pm.

As in past years, festival-goers will be treated to free hay rides, face painting, pumpkin decorating, games, and treats. Capping off the Halloween Festival is a children's costume parade, which will take place at 2:00 pm with prizes for the best costumes. In addition to the Halloween Festival, the local dog owner's organization, Fort Greene PUPS, will once again hold their popular annual Dog Costume Contest on top of the Fort Greene Park at 12:00 noon.

Local arts organizations supply much of the talent for the Fort Greene Park Halloween Festival's entertainment. For all of its eight years the Halloween Festival has been sponsored and organized by the all-volunteer Fort Greene Park Conservancy. The Conservancy works with local businesses and organizations to help sponsor the festival as well as staff booths and tables allowing them to introduce themselves to the community.

The Conservancy continues in its tradition of reaching out to all Brooklyn, with an array of free events and festivals, such as the 2007 Summer Film Festival and concerts in the park. Last year's Halloween Festival was made possible in part by the generous leadership gifts from Aguayo & Huebener Real Estate, BAM Local Development Corp., Brooklyn Properties, Clermont Armory, the Corcoran Group, and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.

To volunteer for the festival or for sponsorship information email the Conservancy.

Items for sale Sponsor a Bench in the Park!

Starting this fall, the Fort Greene Park Conservancy will begin offering the opportunity for individuals or organizations to sponsor park benches within the park. The Parks Department has identified seven locations in the interior of the park to place 37 new benches.

The park bench that will be offered for sponsorship is a reproduction of the benches that graced the 1939 New York World's Fair, commonly called the World's Fair Bench. They are 8 feet long with hard wood slats and three metal arms. An engraved plaque identifying the bench's sponsor (or sponsors) will be installed on the top wood slat of the bench. A full bench can be sponsored for $3,000, or for $1650 you can have half a bench with an engraved plaque. The cost of sponsorship is 100% tax deductible.

Sponsoring a bench is a great way to remember a special person or to celebrate an anniversary or other important occasion. Since we only have room for 37 benches and the locations are limited, we anticipate they will go fast. Look for an upcoming feature on our website about this wonderful sponsorship opportunity. Free Film Festival in August

Saturday, August 25th: West African Film Night
    Dusk to 11:00 PM
Rooftop Films presents "Welcome to Nollywood," a feature documentary about the exploding film scene in Nigeria. Director Jamie Melzer takes the viewers behind the scenes on the set of a low budget action film.
    Food sponsors to be announced.

    Thursday, August 30th: Baseball Night
    Dusk to 11:00 PM
The Fort Greene Park Conservancy in association with American Opera Projects (AOP) present an evening of "Baseball through the Eye of the Artist."

    • AOP presents scenes from its opera-under-development "The Summer King" by Daniel Sonenberg. The protagonist of the opera is Josh Gibson, the renowned Negro League baseball slugger whose tragic story ended just before Jackie Robinson broke through the color barrier with The Brooklyn Dodgers. Using a contemporary musical language of jazzy melodies and jagged harmonies the opera portrays Gibson as a mythic character trapped by societal circumstances: a mega-athlete emotionally unable to weather the strong tides of change.
    • FGPC presents "Bang The Drum Slowly," the acclaimed 1973 baseball film that marked the beginning of Robert DeNiro's illustrious film career. Directed by John D. Hancock focuses on the intense brotherly relationship between a star pitcher and his less talented, terminally ill catcher.
