Greetings,
The daffodils in the park are in bloom, so it
must be Spring. And it couldn't have come any
sooner. There's a lot going on in and around
the park this season and our newsletter is
chock full of
events and information to help further your
enjoyment of springtime in Fort Greene Park.
We hope you are as
excited as we are about the Conservancy's latest
programming and ongoing work to refurbish and
celebrate
our grand park. Your participation and comments
are always welcome.
See you in the park!

Update on the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument Celebration
The first Martyrs Monument Memorial
Celebration took place in November 1908 when
the monument was dedicated by
President-elect, William Howard Taft. 100
years later a grand celebration is in the
works for November 2008 to honor the brave
Revolutionary War martyrs who gave their
lives to secure our country's founding
ideals. Centennial-related events will be
taking place all year as well.
Recently the Conservancy launched Centennial2008.org
a new
website for the latest news and information
about the Centennial Celebration. At the site
one can learn about the monument and its rich
history, see the schedule of upcoming
Centennial events
or sign up to volunteer. You can even find
out if you are descended from a Revolutionary
war hero.
The Prison Ship Martyrs Monument Celebration
is looking for Volunteers! November 2008
is not
that far away. The Martyrs Monument Memorial
Centennial Celebration committee is looking
for volunteers to help us with the
festivities. Is this you?
For those interested in helping with this
event please contact the committee's
chairperson, Ruth
Goldstein, at 718-596-0899.

The First Event of the Centennial Celebration is this Month!
A free walking tour, entitled Walt Whitman's
Fort Greene & Clinton Hill, is being held on
Sunday April 27, 2008 at 2:00 pm. The event
celebrates the founding father of our park,
the poet and Brooklyn resident, Walt Whitman.
Come explore Whitman's Brooklyn on an excursion
that takes you from Fort Greene Park (which
owes its existence in large part to Whitman's
editorials written for the Brooklyn Daily
Eagle), up Myrtle Avenue, and concludes at 99
Ryerson Street, the last existing building in
Brooklyn that was a residence of Walt
Whitman. The tour includes readings of his
prose and poetry and discussions about the
park, the Prison Ship Martyrs and the
monument dedicated to their memory, and
Brooklyn Hospital. Your guide is Greg
Trupiano, Artistic Director of The Walt
Whitman Project.
The tour is sponsored by the Fort
Greene Park Conservancy, Myrtle Avenue
Brooklyn Partnership, and The Walt Whitman
Project.
Meet at the Visitors Center, Top of the Hill, in
Fort Greene Park. For information &
reservations (limited to 25
people) call 718-391-8824.
For a schedule of the events in Fort Greene
Park, check the "Calendar of Events" section
